The district announced Fri. that highschool scholars will be offered online classes to make up most course work they fail this college year. Additionally, summer college programs for those learning to communicate English and for presented and talented students have been suspended. "It's sort of a no brainer as deep as the ( district budget ) cuts are." District officers have claimed they could need to chop up to $33 million from the budget for the fiscal year that starts July one. "We think we are able to supply the same quality service to kids, but it'd be at their own neighborhood high school," associate super Connie Cook related. While last year 35 to forty staff members were wanted to teach and supervise classes, the district predicts needing only twenty-four to twenty-seven folk for this summer's five-week program.

the net classes, designed by peak Learning, have been employed in the district in other capacities during the past, Cook declared. East High will still offer 9 to ten study room courses which have been specifically designed by the district, she announced. Both presented and accomplished and English learning summer courses are being eliminated so those programs can be offered in the school year, officers said. "This is, I suspect, a preparation for the cuts that we are going to be forced to make which will go to the bone," announced college board member Dick Murphy. "I am upbeat that we're going to be able to resume at least some of our ( presented and talented ) enrichment programming in summer 2011.". The presented and accomplished summer college and camp cost "many thousands of dollars" outside the summer college teaching paid by mothers and fathers every year, Mishak wrote. Money is required to make sure that state-mandated programs for presented scholars are supplied in the college year, she announced. Much of the Fed cash for the district's English Language Learners program went this year to keeping and hiring teachers, asserted Vinh Nguyen, ELL program coordinator for the district. "Lately, we have had tons of children coming at once and we wanted to find some methods to incorporate their learning," Nguyen recounted.

"It was very useful to children new to the country, new to the program, new to the high school system," Nguyen asserted. The program's cost, $100,000 to $150,000, was covered thru Fed cash used this year to keep and add to the staff. Nguyen asserted he's going to continue to try and find money and volunteers to offer some kind of programs this summer for the ELL scholars.
