With the Hank Garland biopic Mad under his belt, guitar god Steve Vai is now a production mogul. Why failed to Funny get a dramatic release? It's coming out on DVD and Blu-ray, but with the awards the picture received, one would think that it would have played in theaters.

Well, to get a melodramatic release, a film company has to invest something similar to $30 million. Advertisingpromotion - it takes serious money for a film to even get to the general public.

We took it to each massive distributor and each small distributor, and there's particular things that they look for and we just failed to have them. You can make the most terrible slasher picture in the world for $200,000 and get a melodramatic release, as the statistics indicate a certain quantity of folks will go see such a film irrespective of how bad it is. So we had a docu-drama about a musician that not a great deal of people know. And the hardest problem was that we did not have an A-list star. When you glance at the share of the films that get dramatic releases, it's extremely little. Still, I am extraordinarily upbeat about the film. I believe it is an evergreen picture because it's about the guitar. I know lots of film folks and actors and sporting heros, and when they're going home, they need to play guitar. There isn't a lot of photos like this one. Sean Penn did Sweet And Lowdown, which was a great film. So it's a picture for all those folks who love the guitar, and that is a giant audience.
