The case is the newest example in what is perceived as vishing attacks, which use the telephone network to swindle folks out of money. The caller is then sometimes asked to punch in a Visa card number or other private info. How straightforward is it to spoof a phone number? With voice over IP telephone technology, caller ID spoofing has become reasonably straightforward to do. The conventional telephone network works by connecting one circuit to another. Each circuit on either end of the call is allotted a telephone number by the telephone company. So changing the phone number of a caller was tougher. Telephone numbers are basically allotted by the users themselves. These numbers may be employed to disguise where calls are originate. These services permit corporations to choose any telephone number for caller ID they desire. And some telemarketers use the service to spoof numbers. Is caller ID spoofing illegal? No it is not. Are there are bonafide uses for caller ID spoofing? Yes, there are some bonafide uses for spoofing. Voice over IP suppliers unarguably must employ spoofing, or some type of number manipulation, to make telephone numbers.
Barristers might also use ID spoofing to defend the location of clients in domestic violence cases. But telemarketers are also using the strategy to get folks to buy fraudulent products.
