When Lindquist saw the family's environment, she felt she wished to do something for them. After their return to the U. S. , the mum and child put on a fundraiser expecting to generate some of the $8,000 to $10,000 that will be wanted to construct the Indian family a two-story home. thank you to the community for helping make it happen.". Sheila ventured back to India in October 2008 to start work on the home. She hired up to thirty local workers a day to work on the building, haul supplies, mix concrete and construct the house by hand. The employees were paid between $1 and $3 a day, a fair wage in the bankrupted area, Sheila announced. Where there had once been an ancient shack now stood a brick and concrete two-story home with electricity and some indoor plumbing. "It gives them more space and individual rooms, the creature comforts they did not have before," Nol recounted. "It benefits the family and gives them some pride in the community.". The home's first floor had a main living area and storage area, along with an Indian-style loo and kitchen where the family could cook over a propane burner. The second story was "Americanized" with a bedroom, Western-style toilet that incorporated a toilet and shower, and a kitchen with a counter. Having the ability to prepare food on the counter was the 1st time any one in the family had cooked with no need to squat. Most vital, Sheila declared, the higher floor gave the Sahinis a place to remain dry in the summer monsoons and floods.
