Note that the Masked Guru does not recommend ANY of this:-

The easiest way to control aged dad's fiscal blunders.

18 July 2010

My pop is 84 years old and in fairly good health, apart from a limp in his walk. He is fairly active at church and has a woman chum with whom he enjoys eating out, shopping and going to church. The issue is, my pop is among the worst impulse purchasers I have ever seen.

What makes it worse is that Father purchases items in secret. He will actually give money from his pocket to anyone that asks. I have spoken and rapped with him about these rackets out to swindle you out of each dime you have.

My father is doubtful of me but listens to most any person else. Please give me some recommendation because it's going to be left up to me to handle this. I'm scared a swindle is just around the corner. Unfortunately, unless your dad starts showing indications of dementia, or you believe he's a victim of real crime, you are not going to be well placed to take command of his finances. But it is his cash, and legally, he'll spend it any way he wishes. That does not imply that you should stand by and watch as he spends or gives away each last dime. If you wait too long, he may run right out of cash or slide into debt, and then his options for receiving care, should he need it, will be terribly limited. First, try to get your dad to an elder law solicitor. Try to bite your tongue when the lawyer's recommendation sounds phenomenally like what you have been enlightening him for some years. Look at it from his perspective -- how easily would you take recommendation from your children? Next, ensure your pa has agreed a power of attorney form. You or your bro will need one to pay bills and make other choices when your pop isn't ready to. The advisor can suggest paths to help him control his spending by setting up an account, for instance, that's simply for charity, political contributions and all those extras he enjoys. It could be tough to tell when he crosses the line from being a generous and soft touch to being incapable of handling his finances. At this point, you're going to need to get legal guardianship so you how to make money online can ensure he's sorted. For help when that time comes, again, see an elder law lawyer. Small by small, your father is going to need to trust his kids to look after his best interests.
