Google, Yahoo call for expanded online drug adverts.

The Food and Drug Administration is hearing from many drug and advertising operatives at a two-day meeting on online marketing of medical products. As drug maker and media corporations push for increased online access, purchaser advocates say the FDA must reply with increased enforcement, and that industry should pay for the effort.
The industry's limited online selling presence represents a lost opportunity for search engines like Google and Yahoo, given strong requirement for online medical info. Yahoo vice chairman 
David Zinman is prompting the FDA to draft new rules that give firms greater flexibleness online. FDA rules need all adverts that mention the advantages of a drug also divulge its hazards. Since advertising links that appear on sites like Yahoo only leave room for some words, corporations have effectively been barred from touting the advantages of their products. Firms work around this by running incognito adverts about general medical problems. A link that reads "Cholesterol levels "on Yahoo, for example, connects to the site for Lipitor, Pfizer's top selling cholesterol drug. Zinman and other online managers disagree that such adverts don't help patrons who try to effectively navigate the Web.
"In effect there's less transparency for the shopper as the brand name can't be shown on the page," Zinman announced. "We're going to propose techniques to get balanced and important advertising to customers that's transparent," expounded Mary Ann Belliveau, Google's director of medical care advertising. The web companies' suggestions square with proposals from drug industry's lobby, the Pharmaceutical Research and Makers organisation. The abbreviated text would let makers send short messages about their drugs on social media sites like Twitter, that has a 140-character limit. PhRMA is also prepared to present Thu. , with drugmakers Eli Lilly Company and Sanofi-Aventis. The agency controls products that account for one quarter of the economy, including food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics and tobacco products. "To make sure the balance and accuracy of adverts online and new media will need significantly more resources for the FDA," Zuckerman told a panel of FDA advisers. "Realistically, that cash will need to come from new industry user fees." Pharmaceutical firms already pay millions to back FDA's review of new drugs. Zuckerman and groups like the Clients Union expounded funding for the review of internet advertising should be added to those charges. Doesn't appraise or guarantee the accuracy of any Yahoo.
