The Singularity of Free ITworld

12 July 2010

Furthermore, I do not believe this is a new model. Jones ( and, indeed, the remainder of us ) would like to grasp what the OSI officially has to say of the entire open core farrago.

the difficulty is, I suspect she ( and the remainder of us ) might be disgruntled. Hence while open core may feel skeezy, by the foundations of open-source, it is not. This leads Jones to question if that could be what the OSI intended all along. What's twigged her to this line of reasoning was this statement from Radcliffe's blog:. Which leads Jones to make this statement:. Such a reply is suitable, but only if you consider all software liberty must only be aligned with the copyleft model. And that is where I need to voice my concerns. Part of the difficulty, I think, is that we are attempting to apply the ideas of liberty along a single range. On one end is software that's Free and software that's Not Free. With a range like this, it becomes extremely enticing to put FSF nearer to one end and the OSI nearer to another--or vice versa.

But I would like to think about the positioning as more of an inclusive circle. Outside of the circle, bounded by a line that demarcates the concept of free ( tiny caps ), are things that are exclusive. The closer you are to the center, the nearer to the singularity of Free you are. Within the circle, then, are things that are free. All of the free application software licenses are in there. Or, if you use it setups, the FSF and the OSI are both within the circle. But they're at different places in the circle. They are each moving toward the centre of the circle at different rates. Put an object in the middle of the field, and scatter a handful of observers around it at different angles and distances from the object. From this, it isn't tough to reason the OSI is just as committed to software liberty as any free computer software advocate, and vice versa. They're all struggling for a similar thing, the right way they know how. Neither free or open-source software is more free than the other, because Free means different things to different folks. At the close of the day, there's not one perfect model for everybody. With a huge selection of opensource licenses, and a universal need to supply worth to one's patrons, the "free" debate will live on. Over time, has been well received by overseas.
