Have I got to pay tax on online auction profits?
10 January 2010
A caution for folks who trade products and services thru sites / the best way to take vengeance on a high-charging bank / And the return of charity cons. Going, going, gone : Flogging off your chattels on an auction site won't attract tax, unless you qualify as an e-trader. Even if you are employed and just doing this in your free time, you can still need to register as a self employed trader .
I have just been charged for going overdrawn and I am so fed up about it I need to change my bank. Banks and building societies have to follow stern rules which make switching your checking account as fast and easy as feasible. Many accounts now supply a switching service, so your new bank looks after switching over all of your direct debits when you open a new account with them. Once you have decided which account you would like to open, go to the new bank and give it details of your old bank and your account. You will have to have 2 kinds of identification - one to prove you are who you say that you are and the other to prove where you reside. To be on the safe side, you may have some money in both accounts till you are content everything is operating smoothly before you close your old account. Your new bank will tell you when everything is in place and will ask your old bank to cancel any direct debits you now don't need.
remember to let anyone that pays you cash - like your employer - know that you have got a new account and give them all of the details. I have just had a clear-out and given stuff to the local infirmary so I will not be making a contribution, but I ponder if this should be a swindle. The organisation of Charity Shops guesstimates that legit charities lose about 1m a year in garments and other items as a consequence of fraudulent collections. So you are right to be careful of stoop requests for unwelcome garments, shoes or household and electric goods and bric-a-brac. If this is a swindle, anything you put in the collection bag will get picked up by a commercial operator that may sell the products for money. The leaflet you have will often have a registration number on it to make you suspect it is a registered charity. The collection might be real, but if you would rather not take the chance always give your un-needed items to the local charity shop.
